“What a marvelous picture of God’s plan for His people!”  In the vision of Zechariah 2, the Lord gave assurance that His plan for Jerusalem to be the great center of His redemptive work for the world was still possible.  The 70 weeks of prophetic years given for the Jews and Jerusalem to fulfill God’s purpose (see Dan. 9:24) had only begun.  Zechariah gave God’s call for His  people who had been scattered by Babylon to come out and return to Jerusalem.

Those denominations teach that this vision and others which Zechariah gave are to be fulfilled by Jews in Palestine. They ignore the words Christ spoke as He wept over Jerusalem, “the things that belonged to you are hid from your eyes.” And Christ’s judgment statements when He said, “Your house is left to you desolate. The kingdom of God is taken from you and given to a nation bringing forth the fruits of it” (see Luke 19:42; Matt. 23:37,38; 21:23).

Ellen White clarifies what Christ had in mind when she says, “The Lord’s purposes for His people have ever been the same. He desires to bestow on the children of men the riches of an eternal inheritance.  His kingdom is an everlasting kingdom.  When those who choose to become obedient subjects of the Most High are finally saved in the kingdom of glory, God’s purpose for mankind will have been fulfilled.” (4BC p. 1177).

Zechariah 2:10 was fulfilled by the life Jesus lived. It was carried forward as the disciples went to the Gentiles. These glorious prophecies will find complete fulfillment in God’s New Jerusalem. In these final days of history He is enabling us to fulfill our mission for Him.  Amen.
