Reading through the Bible together
My mother is 74 years old and a widow. My father died of kidney cancer when I was just five years old and mother never remarried. Growing up wasn’t easy in a single parent home with three young children, but she always said we had a special place in the heart of God.
Verses like verse 9, “The Lord watches over the alien and sustains the fatherless and the widow…” (see also Ex. 22:22 and Deut. 10:18). Such verses gave her the strength she needed to raise three young children in the fear of the Lord. I can think of times when I wasn’t thankful for our circumstances, but we pulled through – by counting our blessings. As verse 5 says, when God is the one you put your hope and trust in – you are blessed.
Ellen White encourages us to count our blessings and to shout a couple of more “hallelujahs.” We are told, “If more praising of God were engaged in now, hope and courage and faith would steadily increase” (Prophets and Kings, p. 202). Yes, we all need more hope, courage and faith in these end-time days. Let’s praise God more and give Him the glory, for He is worthy. Amen.
