Reading through the Bible together
This chapter is all about relying on God! Nehemiah did not only rely on God to give him the right words to say to the king, but also to soften the heart of the king so that he could respond to his request favorably. God is able! And as if asking for permission to visit Jerusalem was not enough, Nehemiah asks for a letter from the king to allow him to carry out his God implanted passion to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem. God impresses the king and he grants even that. Amen.
As is the case always, not every one is happy when one starts to do something for God. Opposition has always followed when one tries to carry out the will of God. Satan causes people to oppose God’s work. In this case, Satan used Sanballat and Tobiah the Ammonite officials to oppose Nehemiah.
Nehemiah’s response was, “The God of Heaven Himself will prosper us” (verse 20). The key to prosperity and success when we set out to do God’s will is to fully rely on God.
In addition, Nehemiah was a careful worker who did not start working before he did a clear assessment of the damages so that he would know the scope of work needing to be done. Thoroughness is required whenever we do God’s work.
“God of Abraham, help us always to do Your work with thoroughness.”
