John Donne (1572-1631) wrote “No man is an island, entire of himself.” A truth to be drawn from these words is the ill-advised decisions and actions of one, more often than not, adversely impact many more than just himself. Achan put his own interests above those of others, and his choice resulted in the death of 36 soldiers and embarrassment to the cause of God.

Selfishness infects the human spirit, and in this era where many treat the concept of deferred gratification as if it is a disease it becomes easy for people to rationalize their decisions in an effort to grant themselves permission to do what they wish to do, regardless of how it might affect others.

But true revival and Spirit-inspired reformation transforms our minds to reflect the mind of Christ. What interests my sinful nature is no longer important. My ultimate aims are to please God who created me and bless others who are my brothers and sisters in Christ.
