Levites Given Cities

The Levites, who had not been given a tribal area of their own, came to Eleazar, the high priest, at Shiloh and reminded him that the Lord had told Moses to have the children of Israel give the Levites cities and suburbs for their families to live in.  So at the command of the Lord (v. 3), this is what was done.

Because the Levites were to spiritually minister to all the people, the cities and suburbs they were given were to be scattered among the tribes, which they were.  Altogether, 48 cities with their suburbs were given to the Levites and their families.  Then the Lord gave the Israelites rest all through the land as he had promised to their forefathers and “not one man of their enemies stood against them.  Not one good thing failed which the Lord had said to Israel; it all came to pass.”

The Lord cares about us and our families and His promises are sure.  While their may be difficulties, He has not forsaken us, or forgotten us.  Even though there are difficulties in this world, we are on the borders of the heavenly Canaan, the promises of the Lord will be fulfilled, and there will be rest forevermore.
