Reading through the Bible together
“Be strong and courageous.” These words are expressed four times in this opening chapter (vss. 6, 7, 9, 18) as Joshua, by God’s command, assumes human leadership responsibilities over the children of Israel. With so many challenges lying ahead, it would be easy for Joshua to lose courage in the face of fear. So what would be his secret for victory? The answer lay in God’s promises: the promise that God made to his ancestors (v.6) and the promise that God would accompany him wherever he went (v.9).
We, too, have “giants” awaiting us in our present and future. But we need not fear because God is faithful who has promised. Victory belongs to us, not because we are strong; rather, because He is strong! Therefore, we need to hold on to God and be strong and courageous because of His promises.
