God is sovereign

As we study Ezra, which was written around 400 BC, we may want to keep in mind that the books of Ezra and Nehemiah form one continuous history with the book of Chronicles.  Later they were separated into individual books as we have them now.  Ezra, the spiritual leader, is the author of the book Ezra, while Nehemiah wrote the book of Nehemiah.

These books were purposed to demonstrate God’s faithfulness to His word to restore His people and through this fashion His believing community into His people.  This God did by helping them rebuild the temple and reviving them spiritually.  He used many to bring about the revival, but especially Ezra and Nehemiah.

God is able to accomplish His purposes by any means He chooses.  Cyrus did not know God, but God knew Cyrus even before he was born and had decided to fulfill His purpose through him (Isaiah 45:4).  And when the seventy years were up, He that delivered the Israelites from Egypt, fulfilled His word by stirring the heart of a heathen king to proclaim God’s mission (Jeremiah 25:12; 29:10). Nothing will stop our God from fulfilling His purposes.

“Oh God, stir our hearts that we may walk in Your way and do Your will and may fulfill Your purposes for our lives even today.”
