Reading through the Bible together
The chapter opens with the words about young sixteen year old Uzziah, "he did what was right in the eyes of the Lord" (verse 4). Yet he became proud, went into the sanctuary, and burned incense on the altar which only the priests were supposed to do. He was struck down with leprosy and is remembered as the proud king who was “a leper until the day of his death” (verse 21). How different Uzziah's story could have been had he remembered that everything he was and had accomplished was the work of God and not his own.
If a young God-fearing king, through whom God accomplished so much could so easily fall victim to pride, how easily could you or I? Our only safety is in remembering that we are “marvelously helped” in all that we do.
