Reading through the Bible together
King Jehoshaphat “did not seek the idols of Baal, but sought the God of his father, and walked in His commandments….His heart took delight in the ways of the Lord” (verse 3 and 6). What a beautiful description of what a Christian should be! “Walking” in God’s commands is active, so far beyond mere profession. “Delighting” in the Lord’s ways is even deeper. It shows the inner work of the Holy Spirit, writing the law on the heart until it is a joy to be with God and do whatever He requires.
“Therefore the Lord established the kingdom in his hand; and all Judah gave presents to Jehoshaphat” (verse 5). God delights to bless His children. Obedience to God frequently brings success as well as good favor with people. The book of Proverbs is filled with amazingly helpful counsel regarding finances, parenting, health, and leadership.
Jehoshaphat removed more idols and in the third year of his rule he sent leaders throughout Judah to teach the Book of the Law of the Lord. Neighboring enemies felt the fear of God and did not attack. Some of them even brought presents! This too is an example of how we can lead those under our influence to greater joy by sharing God’s counsel with them.
Today, find some way to be a Jehoshaphat serving, teaching, delighting in God!
