Reading through the Bible together
King Abijah of Judah had 400,000 valiant warriors. It looked like enough. But King Jeroboam of Israel brought an army of 800,000 against him. The odds were 2 to 1.
King Abijah stood up on Mount Zemaraim and shouted warnings against his foe. “We have been faithful to God and you have rebelled.” “We have the living God and His great temple. You have golden calves.” “We have the Levites. Your priests are worthless characters who bought their job.”
It sounded good, but the warnings and inspiration didn’t turn the odds. While Abijah was talking, Jeroboam snuck an ambush behind Judah’s lines. Suddenly they were surrounded with no place to retreat.
No place to retreat to, that is, except up. “They cried out to the Lord” (verse 14). From that connection of faith came a shout. “As the men of Judah shouted, it happened that God struck Jeroboam and all Israel before Abijah and Judah…and God delivered them into their hand…because they relied on the Lord God of their fathers” (verses 15-18).
How are your odds? Are your problems surrounding you with no place to run? Does all your planning and scheming seem useless? Look up. The Lord is ready to deliver anyone who trusts in Him.
