Reading through the Bible together
This section of the genealogy focuses on the eastern tribes of Israel. At first glance, it will likely seem to us that it is more of the same. However, let us take a minute to notice the character of the tribes of Gad and Manasseh.
With the focus on the tribe of Gad from verses 11-22, these descendants of Jacob trusted God. They asked for God’s help against their cousins, the Hagrites. And they were victorious because it was all put in God’s hands. Turning to the remaining passages from verses 23 to 26 we read of Manasseh. They also were noted as men of valor.
Then a change happened. Somehow, along their way, the people from these tribes were unfaithful to God. Somehow they lost their spiritual Way. Scripture says they behaved as spiritual harlots. They acted like the idolatrous Canaanites before them. It ultimately led to their captivity.
Looking at their character, the question for you and me today seems obvious and simple. Have we learned anything from those before us? Are we clinging to the things of the world destined to captivity, or are we holding to the victory of living for Jesus and remaining faithful? Will we remain men and women of valor, captive only to the God of heaven?
